Things Ain't Always (What They Seem)

by Merilyn Steele

/

about

This is a song relating to mental health and suicide prevention; urging us all to look out for one another and don't just think because someone smiles and says they are fine that they are. Encouraging us to look deeper and reach out if we need to.
It is also a tribute to a former colleague, Glen Hannah who was the graphic designer for my Bring It Back album, who sadly lost his battle.

Things Ain’t Always (What They Seem)
©Merilyn Steele

Things ain’t always what they seem
Does darkness lurk behind that smile?
Is there a mask that you present
Only to the world outside?

Such a perfect family
Least from here that’s what it looks like
But who knows what lies within
Behind closed doors, late at night.

CHORUS:
Things ain’t always what they seem
Things ain’t always what they seem
Don’t take for granted what you see
Cause things ain’t always what they seem

With an enviable career
Everybody wants to be you
You’re so loved by all your peers
But you can’t see their admiration

Some would say you have it all
And are held in high esteem
What makes you throw it all away, caution to the wind
At the end of the day?

Never showing what lies beneath
The murkiness of the inside
Must be hard to hide it all
And bear the pain . . . . for the sake of pride…..

CHORUS:
Things ain’t always what they seem
Things ain’t always what they seem
Don’t take for granted what you see
Cause things ain’t always what they seem

CHORUS:
No, Things ain’t always what they seem
Things ain’t always what they seem
Don’t take for granted what you see
Cause things ain’t always what they seem
Don’t take for granted what you see
Cause things ain’t always what they.... seem
